UHear. Taking you right back to basics, the UHear app offers a screening test which can indicate whether your hearing is within normal range or if you may have a hearing loss. It’s easy to use and free from the app store, so you can check your own hearing before you make an appointment with an audiologist if you have concerns.
BioAid. This is a super app that allows you to use your phone as a hearing aid by processing sounds picked up by the microphone and sending these to you via your headphones. This can be a great way to experience how a hearing aid could benefit you in many situations.
MobileSign. MobileSign offers an accessible way to learn BSL using a library of more than 4000 signs for you to search through. If you have hearing loss and use sign language, or live or work with someone who does, this could be an extremely useful tool.
RogerVoice. Here’s an app we haven’t tried but have heard great things about. It’s the world’s first subtitling phone app, and enables conversations to be translated into instant text via voice recognition software.
Braci. This clever app identifies sounds around you, such as doorbells, fire alarms and even crying babies, and creates visual and sensory alarms to help alert you to these.
Vox Sciences. Here’s another helpful app that may be especially useful if you’re adjusting to life with a hearing loss. Vox Sciences can transcribe your voicemail messages into text messages, sending them to your smartphone as SMS text messages or emails.
